A new game

The family has a new game called "It doesn't have to be this way." It has its roots in Critical Theory, with a bit of Postmodernism thrown in for flavor. But the others don't know that. Here's how you play: One person says something of the form "X is Y, but X could have been ____." Player 2 supplies the Z.

Here's a recent example:
Player 1: Steven
Player 2: Luna

1: George Bush is president, but he could have been ___.
2: A T-shirt.

If he were a t-shirt, he'd be so itchy and uncomfortable you couldn't wait to take him off.

Could have been? Considering his depth, I'd say he IS. Fun game...
